A variety of workshops and showcases will be offered at this conference. All workshops are 90 min and showcases are 60 min unless a showcase is combined with a workshop. Bill Ratner- “ Voiceovers for Storytellers – Find Your Best Storyteller Voice” 1:15 PM- 2:45 PM Workshop Session A We discuss methods of seeking employment in voiceovers, producing your own voiceover demos, setting up a home recording studio, and recording a story CD. We practice a vocal warm-up, read voiceover and story text aloud, and address new ways of using your voice in storytelling. Categories- Technology & Business; Performing Skills Levels: All; youth welcome Robert Smyth- “Sound System Basic’s – XRL or 1/4 inch what’s the difference?” 1:15 PM- 2:45 PM Workshop Session A Being a good performer requires knowing how to work with microphones and a sound system. We will cover the basics of sound reinforcement including microphone types, nomenclature, and how they are best used. There will be time for each participant to work with different microphones, for voice and instruments, and learn about them. Categories- Performing Skills; Technology & Business Levels- All Karen Chace – “Enhance Your Online Presence: Blog It Baby!” 3:15 PM - 4:45 PM Workshop Session B Even though cyber space is all “a twitter” there are benefits to maintaining your own blog. Blogging is another way to publicize your skills and promote your venues. This is a hands-on workshop. Bring your laptop and leave with the beginnings of your own unique business or educational blog. Barbara Aliprantis- Crossing Language Barriers With Your Hands- 1:15 PM- 2:45 PM Workshop Session A The rich visual accompaniment of American Sign Language lexicon adds depth of expression and understanding to any spoken story -- for all ages, even with perfect hearing. Come ready to play games to increase visual awareness, learn some signs, and leave with hands full of storytelling tricks that work with all populations. Brainstorm how you might engage youth and their families to create a dynamic, diverse storytelling group focused on peace and understanding in your community. Morris, a storyteller with Early Stages, Inc., as she moves you through the settings and imaginative terrain of various tales. In this interactive workshop, participants will employ the modalities of body, voice and imagination to enter, live inside, and extend the experience of story. Detailed hand-outs provided. Maybe you were laying down on you back in the backward or on a trail when you gazed up at the sky and your imagination ran wild. The clouds, trees, rocks and animals came together with characters and an adventure. Before you knew it, you created a story in your head. This is an inspiring workshop that will bring your class back to nature while learning some incredible storytelling techniques You will walk away with new nature stories and outside activities to use with your students Categories: Education (young children) Levels: All esp Beginner-Intermediate; youth welcome Marion Leeper –“ The Storymat: Rich, Strong and Powerful Stories for Young Children” 3:15 PM - 4:45 PM Workshop Session B Description: Strange creatures, surprising objects, and magical stories appear from the storymat’s pockets. In this hands-on workshop, discover new ways of using props, try out joining-in techniques, re-shape stories to involve and enchant young children. Seriously thought-provoking fun. Bob Reiser- “Mind-Movies (Envisioning your Stories with New Eyes)” 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM Workshop Session D “She was red. Hot as the sun. She lived in a cave and danced with flames. She owned all the fire in the world.” A dream? A film? The start of your next story? Your tale is born when you fully see it, hear it, feel it. Awaken your inner movie-maker. Bring your stories to life! Categories- Performing Skills; Education /Youth Levels: Intermediate - Advanced; youth welcome Jeff Gere - In Your Face! 3:15 PM - 4:45 PM Workshop Session B If EYES be the window to the soul’ then FACE is soul’s yard, welcome mat & front door. With over 200 muscles, the storyteller’s face is a tool traveling the emotional landscape of a story’s psychological terrain. The views are vivacious, the glances gleeful & grim, mugs mirthful and melancholic. Jeff Gere’s facial aerobics lead theater games, improvisations, and stories exploring the subtlety, range and power of FACE. Categories- Performing Skills; Creating Storie; Education/Youth Levels: All; youth welcome John Porcino – “How to Tell a Darn Good Story” 10:45 AM – 12:15 PM Sunday Workshop Session C This is an experiential “playshop” in which participants are guided through the process of finding, learning, building and polishing stories for telling. The emphasis will be on finding the creative voice in each of us. Participants leave with at least one new story and a template for creating many more. Using stories and songs from the American Revolution, The Hudson River Ramblers reveal values you may turn into learning activities in storytelling, schools, libraires and historic sites. Attendees will gain a practical method of mentoring or being mentored. Handouts will be available and participants should come ready to try things. Cris Riedel – “You GOT ‘Em! Now FIND ‘Em! Discovering Your Character Voices “ 1:15 PM- 2:45 PM Workshop Session A Character Voices, those magical additions to story. Everybody can find them! My discovery voice work begins in technique and moves into imaginative play that leads to realization of what your voice can do. Cindy Rivka Marshall –“ What a Character! Portraying Characters With Your Body and Voice” 3:15 PM - 4:45 PM Workshop Session C Learn a method for creating clear, specific characters. We will loosen up body and voice to allow characters to come through gesture, walk, vocal patterns and facial expressions. Come work on a character from a story you already tell, or choose a new one on the spot. For all levels. Are you experiencing vocal blow out with certain stories? Learn strategies to reduce damaging vocal techniques while not sacrificing your artistic interpretation! This voice care workshop emphasizes troubleshooting for your character voices. The participants will explore vocal flexibility that preserves the storteller’s voice in guided exercises led by voice therapist and storyteller, Jean Armstrong. Bring your vocally demanding stories and characters for coaching and small group work. Through physical and vocal characterizations, we will explore different points of view and discuss how they influence the story. Finally, we will talk about choosing the narrative voice. Jean Armstrong - Character Voices That Don’t Damage Yours! 3:15 PM - 4:45 PM Workshop Session B Are your favorite character voices silencing you? Are you experiencing vocal blow out with certain stories? Learn strategies to reduce damaging vocal techniques while not sacrificing your artistic interpretation! This voice care workshop emphasizes troubleshooting for your character voices. The participants will explore vocal flexibility that preserves the storteller’s voice in guided exercises led by voice therapist and storyteller, Jean Armstrong. Bring your vocally demanding stories and characters for coaching and small group work.
